A half day in Nara: the Great Buddha, park paths and wild deer
Leave time to look up at the Great Buddha Hall, then pause in the park. This walking plan starts at Kintetsu-Nara Station and combines Todaiji, a short Nara Park stroll and lunch before returning.
This is a researched itinerary proposal, not a first-person travel account. Timings are suggestions, food costs are estimates, and admission fees and visitor conditions are official information checked on the date above.

A five-hour walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station
Walk east along Noborioji to Todaiji’s Great Buddha Hall, return toward Nandaimon Gate, then explore a manageable part of Nara Park around Ukigumo Enchi. Have lunch and a drink break on the way back to the same station. Kasuga Taisha and a climb up Mount Wakakusa are outside this route, leaving time to look up at a remarkable building and pause in the park.
Allow roughly 9:00–14:00 and ¥2,600–4,200 per adult locally. Return travel to Kintetsu-Nara, shopping and extra admissions are excluded. JR Nara Station is in a different location from Kintetsu-Nara Station, so check the station name when planning your journey.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 9:00–9:40 | Walk from Kintetsu-Nara toward Todaiji. The official estimate is about 20 minutes east along Noborioji; allow 40 for crossings, finding your way and a pause. |
| 9:40–10:50 | Allow about 70 minutes for buying admission and visiting the Great Buddha Hall. Shorten the park walk if admission queues take longer. |
| 10:50–11:40 | Return toward Nandaimon and walk around Ukigumo Enchi, adjusting the distance to your pace and the deer’s behaviour. |
| 11:40–12:40 | Lunch on the way from the park toward the station. Keep another restaurant option if a queue is long. |
| 12:40–13:10 | A drink break. Check each café’s own hours and days off and have another option if it is closed. |
| 13:10–14:00 | Return to Kintetsu-Nara. Add time separately for shopping, luggage collection and your onward connection. |
At the Great Buddha, look a little higher
Todaiji’s official description gives the seated statue’s height as 14.98 metres. Knowing the number may draw your attention to the face, ears and hands: which part feels largest when you look up? Leave time to see the whole statue rather than making photographs the only goal.
The hall has another surprise. The present building was rebuilt in the Edo period with a smaller width than its predecessors, which were about 88 metres across. It is still about 57 metres wide and 49 metres high. Imagining a still wider building can change the way you look at it. These measurements and the rebuilding history come from the temple’s official guide.
Admission, opening hours and cash
Ordinary individual admission to the Great Buddha Hall is ¥800 for adults, high-school and junior-high pupils, and ¥400 for elementary-school pupils. Other paid halls and Todaiji Museum have separate charges; the budget includes only the Great Buddha Hall. The official guide currently says payment is cash only. Keep the admission money ready before reaching the counter.
The hall opens 7:30–17:30 from April through October and 8:00–17:00 from November through March. It normally opens every day except special events or emergencies. The official FAQ says advance reservations are not required. This is not a guarantee of access on a particular date: recheck the temple’s latest notices before travelling.
Follow signs and staff instructions and keep the route clear for other visitors. Check current photography conditions on site and in the official guide. The photographs in this article are rights-checked archive images of Nara Park and deer.
Are the deer pets?

Nara Prefecture explains that these are wild animals, even if they are used to people. They find their own food among park plants; shika-senbei deer crackers are a treat, not their staple diet. Watching from a respectful distance can be part of the pleasure without drawing the deer closer.
The prefecture asks visitors not to touch or chase deer unnecessarily and not to give food other than deer crackers. Be especially careful around males during the autumn rut. Children should not approach alone, and maps, bags and other belongings should be kept secure. Take rubbish home.
Buying deer crackers is optional and excluded from the budget. If you choose to buy them, check the current displayed price and feeding instructions. Where the deer gather and how they behave can change; let them set the pace rather than following them for a photograph.
A little unplanned time at Ukigumo Enchi
The prefecture describes Ukigumo Enchi as a central part of Nara Park with a walking route between the Daibutsuden intersection and the Nara Kasugano International Forum IRAKA. It fits the return direction from Todaiji without adding a mountain climb. Events sometimes use the area, so adapt the route to current access signs.
Instead of immediately deciding on another attraction, leave a little room for trees, a breeze and the deer. If you are tired, heading to lunch earlier still makes a satisfying half day. The greenery in the archive photographs does not promise autumn colours or fine weather on publication day.
Local budget: ¥2,600–4,200 per adult
| Item | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Great Buddha Hall | ¥800 | Official ordinary fee; other halls and the museum excluded. |
| Lunch | ¥1,200–2,000 | Editorial allowance, not a restaurant quotation. |
| Break / drinks | ¥500–1,000 | Estimated allowance. |
| Contingency | ¥100–400 | Estimated allowance for extra drinks and similar costs. |
| Total | ¥2,600–4,200 | Return travel to Kintetsu-Nara, deer crackers, shopping and extra admissions excluded. |
This walking budget has no local bus fare. If you decide to use a bus to reduce the walking, check the operator’s current services and fares and revise both the route and budget.
Rain: shorten the park walk and return earlier
In light rain, make the Great Buddha Hall the main stop, shorten or omit the park walk and return after lunch. The route from the station and parts of the temple grounds are outdoors, so this is not an entirely sheltered itinerary. Bring suitable footwear and rainwear; consider postponing in heavy rain, strong winds or transport disruption.
Before leaving, check Todaiji’s notices, rail service information, weather and park access updates. The aim is enough room to enjoy the Great Buddha and return comfortably, rather than completing every minute of the schedule.
