Fukuoka / Ohori Park · Half day on footA slower Fukuoka afternoon: Ohori Park and Fukuoka Art Museum
/ Official information checked 26 October 2026
Walk beside the pond, then spend time with art indoors. This car-free plan divides about four hours between Ohori Park, Fukuoka Art Museum’s collection galleries and a relaxed break.
This is a researched itinerary proposal, not a first-person travel account. Timings and walking allowances are suggestions; food costs are estimates. Admission fees and visitor rules are official information checked on the date above. This is not a guarantee of opening on any particular date.

An afternoon with just two main stops
From Ohori Koen Station, walk a manageable section of the park, visit the collection galleries at Fukuoka Art Museum, take a break and return to the same station. Combining outdoor time with a museum suits a slower afternoon without travelling between distant attractions. Dinner and food stalls are outside this plan.
Allow roughly 13:00–17:00 after lunch. The local adult budget is ¥800–1,700, excluding return travel to the station, lunch and dinner. Your walking distance depends on the paths you choose: prioritise museum time and rest rather than completing a full circuit.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 13:00–13:15 | Walk from Ohori Koen Station into the park. The park gives an official 7-minute station-access estimate; allow extra time for exits and crossings. |
| 13:15–14:00 | Walk toward the museum, pausing by the pond. Allow 45 minutes including a bench break; a full circuit is not required. |
| 14:00–15:30 | Visit Fukuoka Art Museum’s collection galleries, allowing about 90 minutes including admission and organising belongings. |
| 15:30–16:15 | Take a drink break. Check each café’s own hours and days off; choose another option or a drink you have brought if necessary. |
| 16:15–17:00 | Return through a manageable part of the park to the station. Leave room for your evening plans and onward transport. |
You do not need to complete the two-kilometre circuit
The official park description puts the route around the pond at approximately 2 km. Photographs and bench breaks take time as well as walking. Keep to the station-to-museum side of the park if you want a shorter route; detours to the far bank or islands are optional. Follow signs and look out for runners and bicycles when crossing paths.
Boat hire, the Japanese garden and special activities are excluded from the itinerary and budget. If adding them, check their individual opening conditions and fees rather than cutting museum time too closely. On a hot or wet day, shorten the initial walk and enter the museum earlier.

Collection galleries: ¥200; special exhibitions cost extra
The official individual fee for collection exhibitions and the museum’s planned exhibitions is ¥200 for adults, ¥150 for high-school and university students, and free for junior-high pupils and younger. Group prices for 20 or more and exemption rules differ. This budget uses the ordinary adult rate without assuming eligibility for a discount. Special exhibitions have separate admission charges and are excluded.
Normal opening is 9:30–17:30, last admission 30 minutes before closing. Friday and Saturday opening extends to 20:00 from July through October; do not apply that extension to a Tuesday visit. The ordinary individual visitor guide reviewed does not state that advance booking is mandatory and also links to online tickets. Check separate conditions for special exhibitions and events.
A Tuesday is not automatically an open day. The museum normally closes on Mondays, or the first subsequent weekday when Monday is a public or substitute holiday, and from 28 December to 4 January. Autumn 2026 has exceptions: official collection information lists closures on 6, 13, 20 and 21 October and 24 November. When checked on 26 October, the official calendar did not designate Tuesday 27 October as a temporary closure. Recheck the calendar and notices before leaving; individual rooms can also close for exhibition changes.
Works on display change, so do not plan on a particular artwork being available. Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art is a different institution: check that directions and tickets refer to Fukuoka Art Museum at Ohori Park.
Budget: ¥800–1,700, excluding transport and main meals
| Item | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Collection admission | ¥200 | Official ordinary individual adult fee; special exhibitions excluded. |
| Drink / break | ¥500–1,000 | Editorial allowance, not a café quotation. |
| Contingency | ¥100–500 | Estimated allowance for additional drinks and similar costs. |
| Total | ¥800–1,700 | Travel to/from the station, lunch, dinner, shopping and extra paid attractions excluded. |
This collection-admission budget does not assume an hourly charge for a longer gallery visit. Check local conditions for re-entry or changing to a special exhibition. Add your transport costs separately using the operator’s official route search, as they depend on your starting point.
If it rains or the museum is closed
In light rain, shorten the park walk to about 15–20 minutes and spend more time in the museum after checking it is open. The walk from the station is outdoors, so this is not an entirely sheltered route. In heavy rain or strong winds, skip the pondside paths and bridges and reconsider the outing.
If the museum is closed, choose a shorter park-and-break afternoon in good weather, or move the museum visit to another day. If it is wet as well as closed, postponing is a better option than extending the outdoor walk. For same-day flights or long-distance trains, add luggage collection and travel to the airport or station separately: a 17:00 finish here does not guarantee any connection.
